Fall is “the time when everything bursts with it’s last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale”
~ Lauren DeStefano
Even if you are an absolute summer fan, like I am; there is something wonderful about the fall season. When the temperature drops and the leaves change colour, we change our wardrobe and put on the things that keep us warm and cozy.
Our homes can become warmer and cozier as well with these simple tips.
Cuddle weather is upon us and nothing makes a living room more cozy than a throw blanket. There are dozens out there to choose from that can add a pop of fall colour to your space or make your room feel more inviting. Throws are warm and you can add texture to your room by choosing a faux fur or nubby knit. Remember, they are called throw blankets for a reason and look great just casually thrown over the arm of your sofa or back of a chair.
We tend to spend more time indoors at this time of year and comfort is key. Our favourite television shows begin again and we find ourselves spending more time relaxing on the couch. Add seasonal pillows to your sofa, love seat and chairs. Mix textures, shapes, sizes and patterns to create the ultimate cozy seating area. My ultimate favourite pillows are down filled as they tend to be weighted and sit nicely on our leather sofas. I have found many pillows that are not down-filled spend most of the time on the floor as they do not keep a shape or sit nicely on our furniture. (not to mention, I find down-filled pillows WAY more comfortable) Down-filled pillows may cost a bit more, but they are worth it!
If your home has hardwood or tile floors you may wish to add an area rug to your living space keep your toes warm! Area Rugs also save your hardwood from wear, ground the room and can be a focal point in your space.
It gets dark earlier and dim lighting or candles can help make your home cozier during those dark evenings. There are many fall scents to choose from that will fill our home with familiar fall aromas like pumpkin spice, apples pie, cinnamon bun and caramel latte. Candle light is relaxing and can relieve stress at the end of the day. If you are not a fan of candles or scents add a lamp to the area or a dimmer switch to your space.
Change out your light summer bedding for a down comforter, warm blankets and flannel sheets. Winter ready bedding will allow you to not only be extra warm and cozy at night but allow you to turn your thermostat down at night to save you money on heating costs. Warning… this type of warm and cozy bedding may cause you to hit snooze a few times in the morning!
Not all homes have a fireplace; however, if your lucky enough to have a gas or wood burning fireplace now is the time to grab a good book, a hot drink and curl up by the fireplace and enjoy your completely cozy and warm home.
